Homeschool: Change Things Up Unit Studies

Have you noticed that when the seasons change, your children seem to get antsy?  Mine changed their attitudes with the weather.  Kids want to go out and play or seem to get bored with their studies.  I could understand their challenge, because I also felt restless and lost my interest in their studies.

With Thanksgiving coming soon, I found it was a great idea to change things up in my homeschool.  We usually did school with textbooks, so I decided to try something different for a while.  Before the holiday was a good time to try Unit Studies, instead.  Many years we did a unit study on Thanksgiving.  There are lots of ways to find Thanksgiving Unit Studies.  You can just google it and copy someone’s plan online.  These can also be adapted to the age of your children and your desires.

Creating your own Thanksgiving Unit Study is easy, too.  In a unit study, you want to develop your theme across most of the subjects that you teach.  You could start with History and go from there: literature, art, music, Bible, geography, and composition.  We always added cooking, of course.  Doesn’t your mind just start spinning with ideas?

When the children were little, they enjoyed dressing up as pilgrims for Thanksgiving.  That didn’t last long, though.  It’s really wonderful to include a service project into your unit plan.  I’m sure your community or church will have some type of “Giving” project to participate in.  Children who start young with service will be the ones serving others as they grow older.  I think this was always my favorite part of the holidays.

Here are some you can check out: (I haven’t used any of these, myself)

I hope you have a wonderful time with your children learning about Thanksgiving.  I think this type of unit will not only teach your children about Thanksgiving, but will also help them to be more thankful.
