It’s Not What I Planned
This isn’t the July that I would have planned. Being in a Mast Cell Activation Disorder flare has made the last two months truly miserable. What started as a random anaphylactic episode, has turned into a flare of epic proportions.
I go to sleep itching and wake up itching. My rashes pop up all over the place. Taking the 2 Zyrtec, D Hist, and Benadryl, along with all my other drugs, is a little bit too much. They make me so groggy and just downright sleepy. I’m tired of the battle.
After a few more days, I’ll be contacting the doctor for a stronger dose pack of prednisone. At this point, I just hope that a stronger and longer dose pack will actually break up all of this MCAS flare.
On top of worrying about my health, I continue to worry about the health of my family members. Covid-19 has been very active in places where many of my family members live. I hope and pray for them everyday to stay safe and well.
The first half of 2020 is over, but the second half of this year may be worse. My thoughts lead me to try and make the second half of this year better than the first half. My gut tells me that it probably is a pipe dream. I miss my kids terribly, but don’t feel free to travel.
So, for now, I’ll concentrate on what I can actually do during this time. I can work on my relationships with family and try to be an encouragement to them. My health is also something that I can work on. With my new health team, I plan to do the best I can to work hard. None of the new treatments may help, but I can at least give them a try.
Instead of writing a typical bucket list of things I want to accomplish, I’m making lists of things that are more relational than anything else. I don’t know of any upcoming trips, vacations, or fun experiences. But, I can plan to make changes that will be beneficial to myself and my family.
- Unplug and talk
- Talk over a puzzle
- Watch a fun movie
- Cook together
- Play a challenging board game
- Tell people why they are special
- Write letters to far-away family
- Send photos to them, too
- Don’t talk about politics for the day
- Look at old family photo albums or videos
- Plan meals around a theme occasionally (ex. banana day – fix something with bananas at each meal.
- Sit on the patio and listen to the rain
What are some ways you can encourage your loved ones or build stronger relationships? It’s fun to just think about things that your spouse or child is passionate about, and come up with a way to please them. And, don’t forget self-care. Take enough time to focus on your own needs.
