My holistic clinic team have been instructing me in how to make changes in my life to lower the inflammation. All the supplements that were prescribed for me finally came in. Yesterday I filled my pill strip with all the new vitamins and minerals and started taking them. I knew that there were probably too many to take, but I decided to go for it. But, just because I want to get better health doesn’t mean that it will happen.

I take all my pills and supplements with meals and plenty of water. As I was eating and taking these new supplements, I felt really full. I kept taking them throughout the day, but by early evening I started to feel sick.
My stomach got very bloated and I was burping vitamin taste. Yuk! Then, I got very nauseated. After that, the itching and rashes hit me. I wondered which of the new supplements had caused an allergic reaction. I started reading about the side effects.
The only thing I could find was that magnesium has a rare chance of causing immune reaction. Well, if anyone can get a rare side effect it would be me. The reaction got worse and worse. So, the Benadryl had to be taken. I was up most of the night itching, taking Benadryl, and getting frustrated that I couldn’t stop the reaction.
Today is a continuation of the Benadryl dosing. I’ve decided that I won’t take any more supplements until the reaction is over. Then, I’ll introduce one supplement at a time until I find the culprit.
This is discouraging, because I started the new diet that my nutritionist gave me. Buying all the expensive ingredients to eat on this diet is tough on our budget. I didn’t even stay on the diet, because I was trying to get the nausea under control. I usually turn to crackers and soda to help. Those things are not on my new diet.

Oh, well. I will do the best I can and eat as healthy as possible. I won’t get down on myself if I can’t take the supplements. My complex medical problems don’t fit any particular agenda. A specific diet may not work, either.
Whatever happens with my health, I will continue to trust God. He always gives me joy and peace. There have been days lately where my pain and allergic reactions make me feel horrible. But, I remind myself how blessed I am.
I am so grateful for all the good things in my life: seeing tree branches blow gently out my window, watching the squirrel eat a small green tomato he took from my neighbor’s tomato plant, and seeing videos of my grandchild. These and many more things make me glad to be alive.
If you’re like me, you probably struggle with what to eat and what drugs or treatments to take. I hope that whatever you decide, you can feel good about your choices and that they are helpful.
