Did You Survive Thanksgiving Dinner?

How was your Thanksgiving? Did you survive all the extra work and rich food? I’m super tired and still trying to calm down my stomach after a lovely Thanksgiving Day. I did cook some of the traditional meal, but also bought some pre-made pies. I enjoyed my scratch-made rolls and grit cheese casserole.

I made sweet potato casserole, stuffing, and Aussie Chicken for my guys. I ate tons of vegetables and it was all so delicious. I over-stuffed myself and have regretted it ever since. I’m now back on my regular diet and I know that my stomach will adjust in a few more days. I think it’s worth it to eat a little bit of food that I should have avoided. My rolls truly melt-in-your-mouth taste is something that I only eat once or twice each year.

They have real butter and real milk. I normally avoid all dairy, because my stomach hates it. The grit cheese casserole is also a once-a-year splurge, but it’s soooo good. We skipped the turkey, because I can only eat organic and the smallest bird in the store here was 20 pounds. That’s too much meat and too expensive.

No matter that I cheated a little, I still ate most everything from scratch. In this way, I knew exactly what went into the dishes. This prevented me from having an allergic reaction. I also took digestive tablets with my meal and more afterward. With food and chemical sensitivities, I’m regularly having to tweak my diet. New sensitivities can emerge at any time and that’s one thing that makes eating with chronic illness so difficult.

People who can just eat food don’t know what a blessing that is! They could not imagine that we have to be afraid of food. We are constantly fearful when we sit down to a meal. We certainly can’t go out to eat and just get whatever we want on the menu. We can eat nothing or almost nothing at a fast food joint. We miss out on so much that the rest of the world enjoys.

We take medications with us at all times to prevent or stop the effects of severe food-caused illness or possible death. When I travel or eat at someone’s home, I may rely heavily on baked potatoes because they won’t kill me. Although people might think I’m dramatic, they don’t have to try and live through anaphylaxis.

So, with all the holiday parties, travels, and special meals, I hope and pray that you stay safe from reactions, stomach problems, and rude comments. We have to encourage each other and remind each other to take care of ourselves and be willing to ask for accommodations that you need.
