Have you noticed that when the seasons change, your children seem to get antsy? Mine changed their attitudes with the weather. Kids want to go out and play or seem to get bored with their studies. I could understand their challenge, because I also felt restless and lost my interest in their studies.
With Thanksgiving coming soon, I found it was a great idea to change things up in my homeschool. We usually did school with textbooks, so I decided to try something different for a while. Before the holiday was a good time to try Unit Studies, instead. Many years we did a unit study on Thanksgiving. There are lots of ways to find Thanksgiving Unit Studies. You can just google it and copy someone’s plan online. These can also be adapted to the age of your children and your desires.
Creating your own Thanksgiving Unit Study is easy, too. In a unit study, you want to develop your theme across most of the subjects that you teach. You could start with History and go from there: literature, art, music, Bible, geography, and composition. We always added cooking, of course. Doesn’t your mind just start spinning with ideas?
When the children were little, they enjoyed dressing up as pilgrims for Thanksgiving. That didn’t last long, though. It’s really wonderful to include a service project into your unit plan. I’m sure your community or church will have some type of “Giving” project to participate in. Children who start young with service will be the ones serving others as they grow older. I think this was always my favorite part of the holidays.
Here are some you can check out: (I haven’t used any of these, myself)

I hope you have a wonderful time with your children learning about Thanksgiving. I think this type of unit will not only teach your children about Thanksgiving, but will also help them to be more thankful.

Doctors appointments seem to come in clusters, or maybe it’s just that we usually have appointments every six months. This week we’re all going to the dentist and allergy doctor. Our son had a cavity that needed filling, which he handled very well. He seems to have a family problem: he’s not easily numbed for dental work. I know this is an issue for three of us, and is common with Ehlers Danlos patients. Even though he hasn’t been diagnosed, he has a few signs of the syndrome.
Today was my appointment with the allergist. Since they discovered my Mast Cell disorder, I’ve been taking the treatment for this. Now, the doctor thinks I might have Mastocytosis. He ordered blood tests for a tryptase lab. He sent me over to the hospital lab and now I’ll be waiting up to two weeks for the results. I’ve been reading about this disorder, and I do have most of the symptoms. There are many different types or levels of Mastocytosis.
Next appointment is the pain management doctor. I’ll be glad to report that I’m off of Topamax. My pain levels are pretty decent right now, so I’m thankful. Every little or big thing that is good brings great joy. When you’re all too used to flares of pain, these lower levels of pain are unbelievably appreciated. It’s great to be able to thank God in my prayers for less pain, instead of the usual begging for relief. I never know what a day will bring, but must trust God.
