October is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. I have a personal connection to this awareness promotion. I’ve lost three babies due to early miscarriage, so I feel like I can relate to many who have experienced loss.

The first National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month occured in 1988. President Reagan signed this into existence. This awareness month is used to let Americans know the facts about how often pregnancy and infant loss occurs. It is important to know how many other parents are experiencing this grief.

My Experience

Pregnancy loss is a traumatic experience that can leave permanent scars on the parent’s life. When I had three miscarriages, I experienced severe grief and it felt like I had PTSD. It became an overwhelming time of stress and sadness. All of my life was consumed with trying to have a baby.

Pregnancy loss led me to have many medical appointments, tests, and procedures. All of these medical interventions made having a baby even more traumatic. Pregnancy was no longer a joyful time filled with good expectations. It became a time filled with dread and frightening thoughts.

Infant loss is another awful grief-filled time when a baby dies after birth. Many times, the parents want to memorialize the baby. This is done in many different ways, but the point is to remember the child in a way that is worthy of the love felt for the child.

Wave of Light

We all know someone who has had a miscarriage, a stillbirth, or death of an infant. Unfortunately, 1 in 4 pregnancies will end in a loss of the child. This is a very sad occurrence and we all have to face this fact. It’s important to share in the grief of a family who is going through this sad time.

How To Get Involved

Remembering the child is the most important thing for parents. On October 15, there is a Wave of Light event. Parents everywhere can light a candle to remember their loss. The candles will be lit at 7 pm. You can share your photo or video HERE.
