February 1, 2019, is Wear Red and Give Day. We wear red to spread awareness of heart disease and stroke. 80% of cardiac events can be prevented, so it’s important to tell women how. With an average of 1 person dying every 40 seconds from heart disease, we need to do better.
How many people do you know with heart disease? I know plenty, and many in my own family and family tree. I don’t want to be included, but I’m already at risk by contributing to my own health problems. With high cholesterol and being overweight, I’m putting myself at greater risk.
Many risk factors can’t be helped: being a woman, age, previous cardiac events, etc. But, the following risk factors can:
High blood pressure
High blood cholesterol
Lack of regular activity
Obesity or overweight
We can improve our chances of staying healthy by working on the above list. Even small changes can improve your health! So, let’s commit to working on improving our health everyday. Start today by wearing red.
